Maoist leader arrested in Jharkhand

Ranchi : Jharkhand police have arrested a top Maoist leader who masterminded the killing of 27 security personnel in the state, police claimed Wednesday.

Dhiren da alias Mahru Mahto alias Narayan Mahto was arrested Tuesday night from Chaura village of Bokaro district.

According to police, Dhiren is an active member of Jharkhand central committee of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist). Police also claimed to have recovered arms, Maoist literature and other documents from him.

Police alleged Dhiren masterminded the killing of 13 security personnel in Dhanbad district in 2002 and 14 security personnel in the Saranda forests of the state in 2004.

“We will get vital information from the arrested Maoist leader. He has revealed some hideouts and we will carry out an operation to destroy them,” said a police official here.

In Jharkhand, more than 1,000 people, including 645 civilians, have been killed in the last seven years in Maoist-related violence. Maoist rebels are active in 18 of the 24 districts of the state.
