London : Tottenham Hotspur remain in the bottom three of the Premier League football standings after losing 1-3 at St. James’ Park, reports Xinhua.
Spurs’ slack defence again proved costly Monday as Newcastle United claimed all three points, plunging under-fire manager Martin Jol into even deeper water.
The visitors were lucky to keep a clean sheet for 45 minutes, but the game changed on the stroke of half-time when Michael Dawson failed to clear a long cross from Jose Enrique and Obafemi Martins swivelled to fire past Radek Cerny from just inside the box.
Six minutes after the break Dawson again was the defender at fault as he was unable to pick up Claudio Cacapa, who met Abdoulaye Faye’s corner with a powerful header into the net.
Robbie Keane’s close-range finish on 57 minutes gave the visitors brief hope as he tapped home the rebound from Darren Bent’s header that hit against the post.
For a spell Spurs looked like they were back in the game but their resistance was ended 17 minutes from the whistle by substitute James Milner, who crashed home an unstoppable volley after his first effort was blocked by Jermaine Jenas.
