Islamabad : Pakistan will host the 3rd World Asia Islamic Capital conference in Karachi Nov 7-8, the News Network International (NNI) news agency reported Monday.

The conference seeks to bring together policy makers, bankers, professionals and Sharia scholars from the local and regional markets to discuss the growth of the Islamic banking industry, according to the report.

Islamic banking refers to a system of banking or banking activity that is consistent with Islamic law or Sharia.

Shamshad Akhtar, governor of State Bank of Pakistan, said, “Although our Islamic banking industry is still in its infancy, the level of activity and the interest being taken in this industry by people belonging to all walks of life is fascinating”.

She noted that the expansion of existing banks within Pakistan and worldwide was a reflection of its potential growth, which was not a temporary phenomenon.

The CEO of World Asia-Islamic Capital Partners, Tariq Ali said that the objective of this conference was to provide an opportunity to understand the global picture of Islamic finance and how it influenced the growth of Islamic banking and capital markets in Pakistan.

The World Asia Islamic Capital Conference, now in its 3rd year, would analyse as to how well Islamic Banks were meeting the expectations of their customers, he added.
