Prasad, 40, was found dead in his unit in Bari Brahmana, 15 km southwest of here, army spokesman Lt. Col. S.D. Goswami told reporters. He hailed from Banda in Uttar Pradesh.

“The reason of the suicide is not known,” Lt. Col. Goswami said, adding that a court of inquiry had been ordered into the incident.

In the past year, over 20 army officials have ended their life in Jammu and Kashmir.

The army and police are yet to ascertain the reasons behind these suicides, but factors like long periods of separation from the family, work stress and domestic tensions are said to be the causes for the soldiers taking the extreme step.
