Bhubaneswar : The Orissa government has sought Rs. 10.94 billion from the centre to carry out restoration work in 12 districts of the state that were hit by floods five times this year.
At least 59 people were killed and more than five million people in the state were affected by the flash floods triggered by heavy rains during August and September, a senior revenue official told IANS. The rains were caused due to a depression over the Bay of Bengal.
Floods have damaged at least 76,900 houses and 197,000 hectares of kharif crops, the official said.
A central team led by Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Naveen Verma visited the flood-hit regions in the state Thursday and Friday and met senior officials before returning to New Delhi Saturday.
“We apprised the central team that we need Rs. 10.94 billion to carry out restoration work in the flood-hit areas,” he said.
