Putin Arrives in Romania for NATO Meeting

Bucharest : Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived on Thursday to Romania to attend the Russia-NATO Council, which is to be in session tomorrow, on the sidelines of the NATO summit.

He will give a lecture before representatives of the 26-member NATO, as great friction prevail between the military bloc and Moscow.

The deployment of elements of the US missile defense system in Europe, as well as an eventual expansion of NATO are among main issues expected to be brought up by the Russian delegation.

According to the agenda, Putin is expected to attend a dinner offered by his Romanian peer Traian Basescu in honor of the heads of State or Government of NATO member countries.

In this first trip to Bucharest, Putin is accompanied by Ministers Sergei Lavrov (Foreign Affairs) and Anatoli Serdiukov (Defense) and presidential aide Sergei Prijodko.
