16 killed in northern Iraq bombings

Baghdad : At least 16 people were killed and 22 others injured in two separate bombings in northern Iraq on Monday, Iraqi police said.

A parked car bomb exploded in the Rabiaa area west of Mosul, apparently targeting the passing Peshmerga (the Kurdish Freedom fighters) convoy, an officer with Mosul police said on condition of anonymity.

He said the blast killed 12 soldiers and wounded another two.

In a separate incident, four people were killed and at least 20wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up during a funeral for a Shiite family in northern city of Tal Afar, 70 km west of Mosul, the officer added.

Mosul, the capital city of Nineveh province, some 400 km north of Baghdad, has long been the hot bed of insurgency against the U.S. and Iraqi security forces.
