Indians Protest Price Hikes in Parliament

By Prensa Latina,

New Delhi : The Indian Parliament was the stage of protests on Tuesday by left-wing and right-wing deputies against inflationary rise, demanding more measures to curb it.

The government of UPA (the United Alliance for Progress), led by the Congress Party, was target of strong criticism due to what legislators described as its incapacity to control prices, which have reached their highest level in 41 months.

Deputies of the Left-wing Front staged a march from Samsad Avenue to the Parliament headquarters, where their colleagues from right-wing groups Bharatiya Janata and Samajwadi interrupted the session, prompting its cancellation.

The legislators demanded more measures, besides those proclaimed by government on April 1, as well as firm action against hoarders of basic products.

In the last seven days, inflation in India reached 7.41 percent, the highest level since mid 2004.
