New Taiwan President for China Links

By Prensa Latina,

Taipei : Taiwan president-elect Ma Ying-jeou said he was in favor of thawing relations with China after eight years of tensions due to the current Taiwanese administrations separatist policy.

Ma stated in this capital that the first step was made with the meeting held between the vice president elect, Vincent Diew, and the Chinese President, Hu Jintao, during the Boao Forum for Asia 2008 in Hainan Island last weekend.

On that occasion, Hu said that a new historical opportunity in the Strait of Taiwan is currently available to develop a rapprochement between the island and the continental part of China.

“We have only defrosted a small part of the iceberg,” said Ma, who won the presidency on March 22 heading the Kuomintang Party (KMT) candidature.

“There is still a lot of work to do, and we are constantly moving forward, never rushing, and will never go back,” said the Taiwanese politician, who will assumed the presidency next month.
