UAE Keeps Up Pressure Over Disputed Islands

By Muin Abdul Majid, Bernama,

Dubai : The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has urged Iran to end its occupation of three strategic islands of Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Musa in the Strait of Hormuz.

This was conveyed by Ahmed bin Shabib Al Dhahiri, first deputy speaker of UAE Federal National Council, ahead of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) general assembly in Cape Town.

He said various regional and Arab resolutions, including those issued by the Arab summit in Damascus recently, Arab foreign ministers in Cairo and the Arab IPU, considered the islands as occupied Arab land.

Emirates News Agency (WAM) quoted him as saying that despite all these, “Iran is still committing violations and acts that are not conducive to building confidence in response to initiatives aimed at settling the issue”.

Tehran says the three islands are an inseparable part of Iranian territory.
