New Zealanders for Cuban 5 Release

By Prensa Latina,

Wellington : The Committee of Solidarity with Cuba in Wellington demanded Monday the release of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters that a UN legal panel has determined are unfairly imprisoned in the United States.

The Committee organized an act of support at the Cubita Cafe Restaurant, to collect signatures and demand the prompt liberation of Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labanino, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez.

Pat Bolster, president of the Solidarity Committee, and Gilliam Maggee, secretary of that organization, told participants in the event the characteristics of the unjust and manipulated process against the Five, as they are universally known in international campaigns for their release.

Cuban ambassador Jose Luis Robaina, denounced that while the Five are in jail for almost 10 years, terrorists like Luis Posada Carriles are freely in that northern country, protected by the US government and the anti-Cuban Mafia in Miami.

Several figures from New Zealand like Robert Reid, president of the Distribution Union assembling 20,000 members, and recognized poet Ron Ridell, among others, attend the solidarity gathering.

A billboard with the inscription “Freedom for the Five Heroes,” as well as Cuban flags and photos of guerrilla commander Ernesto Che Guevara illustrated the act.

“Dominion Post” newspaper, the second largest distribution in the Oceania country, and several radio stations, reported the activity.
