New Delhi : The overcrowding in the 1,300 jails in the country, which together house more than 350,000 inmates against the sanctioned capacity of 250,000, will be a key issue at an all-India prisons’ conference here Friday.
The conference would be attended by senior officials of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), inspectors general in charge of prisons and other senior officials.
“Overcrowding of jails would be a key issue at the conference,” said a home ministry spokesman.
Issues related to the management of prisons, aspects of the draft National Policy on Prison Reforms and the Scheme for Modernization of Prisons would also be discussed.
The official said the agenda includes existing laws relating to prisons and the necessary legal reforms, prison infrastructure, correctional administration, security and discipline in prisons, service conditions of prison personnel, etc.
The last conference on prisons was held in March 2004.
