Ramallah : Israel has freed five Palestinian prisoners as part of a recently UN-brokered deal with the Lebanese organisation Hezbollah according to which the two sides swapped prisoners and remains of those who died in captivity.
The freed prisoners arrived Wednesday in two Israeli-driven vehicles at the Al-Taibah passageway of the northern town of Tulkarem where they were handed over to Palestinian security personnel, security sources reported.
Four of the former prisoners were members of the mainstream Palestinian organisation, Fatah, and one affiliated to the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP).
Israel holds 11,000 Palestinian prisoners in its prisons.
