Nepal to Elect Prime Minister Friday

By Prensa Latina,

Katmandu : The Constituent Assembly of Nepal opened candidate registration until Thursday to elect a prime minister Friday while the parties negotiate a single candidate.

The Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M), Nepal Congress (NC), Communist Party of Nepal United Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) and Madhesi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF) are trying to come to consensus on a single candidate.

The CPN-M should have led the coalition as winner of the elections but disagreement on cabinet membership impeded reaching consensus over the weekend.

NepalNews.Com says NC President Girija Prasad Koirala wishes to be defense minister rises as the apple of discord for the CPN-M opposes so the NC started to arrange a new cabinet without them.

Those three already formed an alliance to appoint the president, vice president and AC president, excluding the Maoists.

Representation within the CA is as follows: CPN-M (220 seats), NC (109); CPN-UML (103), and MPRF (50).

The NC proposal to the PCN-UML to appoint a president is seen as a tactic to prevent the Communists from making a majority alliance within the CA with 323 votes plus 16 minority parties that already announced support to the Maoists.

However, they do not expect to set up cabinet without the Maoists.
