Srinagar : Indian police again opened fire in northern Kashmir this morning as thousands of people came out of their homes defying strict curfew restrictions to resume march towards the dividing Line of Control (LOC) while in Srinagar thousands have gathered in historic Jamia Mosque, where body of the slain Hurriyat Conference leader, Sheikh Abdul Aziz is lying since last evening.
At least four people have been killed and hundred more injured in Baramulla and Bandipore firing some of them critically today, hospital sources said. Today’s killings have taken the death toll to 11 since yesterday.
Reports are comming in of people defying curfew from different parts of Srinagar and other major cities and towns of Kashmir.
Director of city’s main hospital the Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr Hameed Zargar said that the leaves of all doctors and paramedical staff have been cancelled as all assocaited hospitals are facing an emergency situation.
Earlier yesterday seven people were shot dead and nearly 300 injured when police opened indiscriminate fire on peaceful marchers in various places along 120 km long Srinagar-Muzaffarabad Highway.
Curfew which was initially imposed on Srinagar has now been extended to entire Kashmir valley after massive demonstrations broke out in almost all towns and cities.
Srinagar newspapers have descried Mondays events as unprecedented and a new uprising against Indian rule.
Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq meanwhile demanded that the curfew be lifted to facilitate mourners to pay their last respects to Aziz.
Mirwaiz said the body of Sheikh Aziz will be laid to rest only after the curfew is lifted and all those under house arrest released so that they too could participate in the Nimaze Jinazah of their slain colleague.
