Pakistani coalition to frame charges against Musharraf

By Xinhua,

Islamabad : Pakistan’s ruling coalition has decided to frame charges against President Pervez Musharraf on the basis of “violation of the constitution and gross misconduct”, a ruling party spokesman said Thursday.

All the coalition partners agree that the chargesheet for Musharraf’s impeachment should be based on these two main points, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) spokesman Farhatullah Babar told reporters.

He said the impeachment motion would be tabled in parliament next week. The chargesheet is expected to come out on Friday.

The ruling coalition parties Thursday announced that they would launch impeachment against the president.

The provincial assemblies in three provinces have passed a resolution, demanding Musharraf take a vote of confidence in parliament. A similar resolution will be voted in the provincial assembly of Balochistan.

Though the resolution has no constitutional weight, it will impose moral pressure on Musharraf to resign before a formal impeachment is tabled in parliament.

But earlier a presidential spokesman had denied Musharraf’s resignation, saying the allegations against Musharraf are baseless.

The coalition needs a two-thirds majority votes in a joint session of parliament to impeach the former army chief.

According to Pakistani constitution, the president has the right to be present in parliament when the joint sitting begins investigation into the charges upon which the notice is founded.

But the president will cease to hold office immediately after a resolution of impeachment is passed based on results of the investigation.
