Berlin : Polish President Lech Kaczynski criticized Russia for recognizing the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, the two breakaway regions in Georgia that have triggered a three-week long war, the press reported Tuesday evening.
The Polish leader branded in a press release the Russian decision as violating international law and an attempt to sanction the consequences of an “unprecedented aggression” by Russia against an independent Georgian state.
Kaczynski urged Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to “immediately withdraw all Russian troops from Georgia.”
He stressed Georgia’s territorial integrity should not be questioned.
The Polish president pledged his country’s “unwavering support” for the Georgian people.
A former Soviet Union satellite state, Poland has strongly backed Georgia in its recent military conflict with Russia.
Kaczynski had labeled Moscow’s military intervention in the South Caucasus republic an “act of aggression.”
South Ossetia and Abkhazia are part of the republic of Georgia and “nothing can change this,” he made clear.
Warsaw has been pressing hard for Georgia’s membership in NATO and the EU, despite earlier German and French objections.
