Thai opposition supporters to rally next week

By KUNA,

Kuala Lumpur : Supporters of the Thai opposition announced they would hold a massive rally next week when Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva gave a speech at the parliament.

Abhisit, who was born in Britain, told Thai media on Thursday that democratic societies allowed holding rallies and gatherings to express opinions without hurting others.

He said he would not force any party to support the government, even if parties showed their anger in demonstrations, pointing out that it was important to hold talks.

He said he planed to visit the jails in northern Thailand, where opposition members were held, mostly those who supported ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Abhisit called on the runaway Thaksin to return to Thailand and respect the court’s rule.

Thaksin is accused of fraud and exploiting authority, in cooperation with his ex-wife, to make an illegal deal of buying a large piece of land in Bangkok.

Twice-elected, Thaksin was overthrown after a military coup in September 2006.
