Islamabad : A large quantity of weapons that were seized during a raid at the Red Mosque in the Pakistani capital last year had been stolen from a heavily guarded police station here, a media report said Monday.
The arms stored in the Aabpara police station were found missing Sunday. Meanwhile, the interior ministry has launched an investigation into the case, the Dawn newspaper said.
Interior affairs advisor to the prime minister, Rehman Malik, has suspended two senior police officers over the incident, while 14 police personnel have been arrested on charges of theft and burglary.
It is believed that duplicate keys might have been used to open the door as no locks were broken, sources said requesting anonymity.
The missing arms include assault rifles, rocket launchers, anti-tank mines, grenades and a large cache of bullets, the newspaper said.
The July 3 operation to flush out the militants holed up inside the Red Mosque had left around 100 people dead and more than 200 others injured.
Pakistan has witnessed a rise in violent attacks after the Red Mosque operation.
