Last phase of polling ends in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar/Jammu : The crucial last phase of the staggered Jammu and Kashmir polls ended Wednesday amid minor clashes between police and anti-election protesters in Srinagar.

Eight constituencies in Srinagar and 13 in Jammu and Samba polled on the last day of the seven-phase elections.

Polling was moderate in Srinagar where officials said nearly 13 percent of electorate had cast their ballot by 2 p.m.

In Jammu, the exercise saw a high turnout and by the afternoon more than 40 percent voters participated, the officials said.

Minor clashes erupted in old areas of Srinagar city after police dispersed anti-election protesters with batons. At least 14 people were injured in the clashes, the officials said.

The polling in Jammu passed off peacefully.

The results of elections which began Nov 17 would be declared Dec 28.
