Kolkata : A 15-year-old girl in West Bengal Wednesday committed suicide by jumping into a pond after her father scolded her for serving him stale food, a police officer said.
“Primary investigation revealed that Ranu Saha’s father Gopal scolded her Tuesday night for serving him stale food at dinner, and this led to the incident,” the officer added. The incident occurred in Ranitala village of Murshidabad district.
He said Saha’s mother went to attend a relative’s wedding at Behrampore town Sunday and left Saha back home to look after her father, who works at a grocery shop.
“The stove ran out of kerosene Tuesday afternoon and Gopal didn’t leave any money with Saha. Hence, the girl couldn’t cook fresh food and served him the food she cooked for lunch,” he said.
But Gopal started scolding his daughter and even used foul language when she served him stale food.
Saha later locked herself in her room and then left home around 3 a.m.
“Gopal was so angry with her that even after seeing her unlocking the main gate, he didn’t stop her. Her body was found by locals Wednesday afternoon,” the officer added.
