26 industrial units in Orissa closed for causing pollution

Bhubaneswar : At least 26 industrial units in Orissa were closed and eight others served show-cause notices this month for causing pollution, a state government official said Saturday.

The Orissa State Pollution Control Board ordered the closure of 26 units and issued show-cause notices against the others in the first week of December, B.K. Mishra, member secretary of the board, told IANS.

“We have received complaints of causing pollution against 61 industrial units across the state by the first week of December. Acting on these complaints, we have taken action against 26 industrial units by ordering their closure and served show cause notices against eight others,” he said.

The complaints are mostly on water and air pollution caused by sponge iron factories, Mishra added.

Twelve out of the 26 units that were ordered to close down were from Sundergarh district, followed by five each from Jharsuguda and Keonjhar districts and four from Sambalpur district. Four units each from Keonjhar and Sundergarh were issued show cause notices.

Official sources said many industries which were shut down following the board’s orders have been reopened after they took remedial measures.
