Tel Aviv : Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s position is hanging by a thin thread Thursday after the release of the Winograd Report on the Israeli Army’s military failure in Lebanon in 2006.
A Teleseker Institute poll show the prime minister’s popularity and credibility continue falling, with 57 percent demanding his resignation, and 69 percent urged new elections.
The fact-finding commission led by retired Judge Eliahu Winograd concluded that the defeat of the Israeli Army by the Lebanese Hizballah resistance movement forces in June 2006 was a consequence of serious political and military mistakes. However, it did not suggest Olmert’s resignation.
At the time the preliminary report was released in April, Olmert’s prestige plummeted with 73 percent of people demanding his resignation.
The Tsahal(Israeli Army)defeat in the invasion of Lebanon and the release of the text have had a great impact on the region, as it was the first defeat inflicted on what is deemed one of the most powerful military forces in the world, invincible until then.
