Washington : The United States presented charges Monday against six of the prisoners held in Guantanamo, for whom it seeks the death sentence for their alleged links with 9/11 attacks, the Department of Defense said.
In his news conference, Pentagon legal advisor Gen. Thomas Hartmann explained the six will be accused of terrorism, murder and attack on civilian targets and people, among other charges.
These detainees remain at the Guantanamo Naval Base, a US facility in Cuban territory there against the will of the Island’s people and authorities.
The accused include Khalid Sheik Mohammed, accused as one of the main organizers of 9/11.
The others are Mohammed al Qahtani, Ramzi bin al-Shibb, Abd al-Aziz Ali, Mustafa Ahmed al-Hawsawi and Walid bin Attash, who are still unaware of the charges against them.
Hartman admitted that the proceedings might take months, but said the trial will not be secret.
The White House decision will revive controversies over secret US jails abroad, as well as the legal situation of the nearly 300 people still held in Guantanamo, according to press reports.
