Berlin : Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke on the situation in the Middle East and the Iranian nuclear program.
Merkel reaffirmed support to Israel but backs a two-state solution, including one Palestinian, and called Israel to make peace with the latter.
The call occurs amid Israel’s near daily attacks since December in Gaza with near 200 fatalities.
Although Israel has nuclear weapons, Olmert called for further global pressures and sanctions against Iran that defends its right to develop a nuclear program for peaceful end although the US claims it is to produce N-weapons.
Olmert will end his official visit with a meeting with Federal President Horst Koehler.
Chancellor Merkel will lead Germany’s delegation to the March 18 feast on the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the state of Israel.
