United Nations : The UN Security Council held a closed-door session at the request of the Serbian government, which regretted the negative response from a group of its members to Belgrade’s demand.

Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jerremic said he felt encouraged by general opinions from member countries about the possibility of achieving a settlement on this situation, caused by threats of a unilateral declaration of independence.

However, he admitted that a minority by predominant group thinks the issue cannot be solved at the UN Security Council.

The incumbent president of the Security Council, Panamanian Ambassador Ricardo Alberto Arias, said the issue is not scheduled for discussion again this month, adding that it is “a problem of the European community.”

The countries that back Serbia’s position, including Russia, have warned that Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence may create a serious precedent for other countries where similar conditions exist.

Foreign Minister Jerremic pointed out that it is unbelievable that the Security Council has said it is incapable of finding a solution to the situation in the Serbian province.

In response to the Security Council’s statement that the time devoted to Kosovo (15 months) has been insufficient, Jerremic wondered what would happen in that same concept were applied to the analysis of the situation in the Middle East and other regions.

Belgrade has proposed to grant broad autonomy to Kosovo under Serbian sovereignty.
