CPI-M’s love for minorities a farce: Congress

By IANS

Thiruvananthapuram : Kerala’s opposition Congress Saturday said the love shown by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) towards minorities was a farce.

Senior Congress leader and convenor of the United Democratic Front (UDF) P.P. Thankachen said: “If one takes a look at the newly-elected 84 member state committee of the CPI-M, one can see that it consists of a mere eight members from the Christian community and seven members from the Muslim community.”

Of the 15 minority committee members, three have been inducted by virtue of being district secretaries and two each are state secretariat members and central committee members.

“Leaving out these seven members, only eight are left. So, the love for these communities is nothing but a farce,” added Thankachen.

State Congress president Ramesh Chennithala added that the CPI-M, which has been leading the state government for the past 21 months, has not done anything for these two minority communities.

“For them these two communities are nothing but a vote bank only,” Chennithala told reporters in Malappuram Saturday.

While Muslims account for about 24 percent, Christians comprise about 22 percent of the 32 million population of Kerala.
