Tehran : Chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on Monday said Israel would be destroyed soon by the Lebanese Hezbollah militant group, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.
“In the near future, we are going to see the destruction of cancerous Israel by the powerful and competent hands of Hezbollah guerrillas,” Mohammad Ali Jafari was quoted as saying by Fars, in a condolence letter to the Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, after the recent assassination of a high-ranking commander of the group.
“The martyrdom of this sincere and devoted fighter will with no doubt to strengthen the wills of his co-combaters to confront the Zionist regime,” he added.
Senior commander of Hezbollah Imad Mughnieh was killed in a car explosion last week in Damascus. As a firm backer of Hezbollah, Iran has blamed Israel responsible for the killing of Mughnieh, sending Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki to attend his funeral in Beirut last Thursday.
Iran has been a long arch foe of Israel in the past years, with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad repeatedly called for “wiping Israel off the map”.
During the summer war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006, top Iranian officials glorified Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel, saying “Israeli government was the main element caused tensions and crises in the Middle East region.”
