Bangladesh Election Commission reaffirms general electons by December

Dhaka : Bangladesh Election Commission Chief Dr ATM Shamsul Huda Monday reaffirmed that the general elections will be held by December this year as per election roadmap.

Dr Huda was appointed the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) by the current caretaker government.

He said this during a dialogue with one of the country’s major parties Awami League that had been in power from 1996-2001.

The Awami League delegation led by its acting President Zillur Rahman pressed for immediate lifting of the 13-month-old state of emergency for creating congenial pre-polls atmosphere.

The parliamentary elections slated for Jan. 22 last year were abandoned following violence between major political parties.

Dr Huda agreed with the Awami League that the emergency should be lifted for creating congenial atmosphere.

He said caretaker government Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed assured him that everything will be done at proper time.

Dr Huda said 50 percent of 40 million registered voters list will be completed this month. A draft voters list will be published by June 30.

The Election Commission is currently holding dialogue with major parties to update election rules.
