Guwahati : At least on person was killed and 14 others injured in a powerful blast in Assam Wednesday.

Initial reports said six people were injured in the explosion that took place in a crowed market in Tezpur, the district headquarters of Sonitpur, about 180 km north of Assam’s main city of Guwahati.

The police later updated the casualty figure, saying 15 people were wounded and one of them succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.

“The bomb was strapped to a bicycle and went off in a market area,” a senior police official said over the phone.

“The injured were shifted to local hospitals with multiple wounds,” the official said.

The victims were all shoppers and vendors. The police blamed the blast on the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), fighting for an independent homeland since 1979.

“The modus operandi of the blast points the needle of suspicion to the ULFA. There are no other militant groups active in the area other than the ULFA,” the official said.
