Patna: To press the demand for compensation to Bhagalpur riot victims like 1984 anti Sikh riot victims, a big rally was organized in Patna on 26th February.
The Muslim United Front organized the march which crossing through the main roads of the city proceeded towards Raj Bhawan (governor’s house). The police, however, stopped the protestors at R-Block. But a group of 500 demonstrators including the riot victims managed to reach Gate No. 2 of the building. The police arrested 16 people including 10 women.
Front leader Md. Abu Quaisar claimed this was the first most successful march to the Raj Bhawan. The officials of the Raj Bhawan accepted a memorandum from the group that reached there. The Front demanded that 3.5 lakh rupees should be given to each victim. The memorandum also supported the recommendations of Justice N.N. Singh Commission and demanded the central as well as the state government to implement the recommendations of the commission.
According to official information, nearly 2,000 people, mostly Muslims, were butchered in several villages during the communal riots here in 1989, which reportedly broke out during the “shila pujan” procession.
