Montas said Annan informed Ban they are exploring alternatives to break the deadlock.

Annan is leading an African Union-commissioned group to promote a negotiated solution to the crisis in Kenya, which has claimed at least 1,000 lives.

The trigger for the violence was the proclamation of re-election by President Mwai Kibaki on December 27, in a process the opposition has described as fraudulent.

The crisis between Kibaki’s followers and those of opposition leader Raila Odinga has attained dramatic dimensions, with marked overtones of ethnic rivalries.
