Five army officers get jail term for corruption

New Delhi : An anti-corruption court of Jabalpur, in Madhya Pradesh, has ordered three years’ jail each for five army officers after convicting them on charges of corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said here Thursday.

The convicted officers include Col. P.O. Ommen, Maj. E.R. Kumar, Lt. Col. P.K Rawal, Lt. Col. J.S. Virdi and Naib Subedar N. Prasad, said the CBI in a statement. Each of them was also ordered to pay fine of Rs.2,000 by the designated CBI court.

The CBI earlier had charged the five army men, along with Jabalpur resident Prahalad Prasad, with criminal conspiracy, cheating and official misconduct in a case involving purchase of 109 tins of adulterated soya bean oil.

The court in two other cases also convicted an administrative officer of a state insurance firm and a branch manager of a government bank.

While Administrative Officer (Marketing) Kripa Shankar of the Jabalpur branch of the United Insurance Company Limited was sentenced to a year and a half in jail, branch manager S.K. Tandon of the Allahabad Bank’s Satna branch in Madhya Pradesh was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.

The two were also asked to pay a fine of Rs.4,000 and Rs.10,000 respectively, the CBI added.

While Kripa Shankar was convicted for accepting a bribe Rs.700, the bank manager was tried for misappropriating a sum of Rs.86,700 from the bank.
