New Delhi : A city based merchant was shot dead Friday in northwest Delhi while he was taking his morning walk, the police said.

Jai Bhagvan Gupta, 48, – who runs a spices and pulses shop – was on his routine morning walk close to his Model Town home when he was shot. The police said it was not clear how many people were involved in the attack.

Gupta suffered bullet wounds on his chest and was taken to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead. He is survived by his wife and two married sons.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest Delhi) Manish Aggarwal said it seems that someone was aware of Gupta’s daily routine and had laid a trap to kill him.

“Gupta used to go on morning walk and feed cows daily in the society. Nobody has seen the assailants so we can’t say about the number of killers and how they escaped after shooting Gupta,” Aggarwal said.

“We have started the investigation, but prima facie it appears to be a case of personal vendetta. We would soon interrogate the family members to see if he had enmity with anyone,” he said.

A case was registered at the Model Town police station and Gupta’s body was sent for post-mortem examination.

On Wednesday, a trader in west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area was shot at while he was returning to his home nearby late at night. The assailants, who tried to rob him, fled and are yet to be arrested.
