Lucknow : A deputy inspector general of prisons in Uttar Pradesh, under suspension for allegedly providing undue assistance to jail inmates, has been removed from service following charges of an alliance with a Mafia don.
In a late night development Thursday, the state’s Principal Home Secretary J.N. Chamber announced the dismissal of Shesh Mani Tripathi.
“His telephonic conversations with mafia don Atul Singh were tapped through electronic surveillance. That came as a clinching evidence to establish his deep-rooted nexus with the underworld,” Chamber told reporters here.
Tripathi was suspended in May 2005 for his alleged involvement in creating a congenial atmosphere for dreaded criminals lodged in various jails of the state.A subsequent probe established the charges levelled against him, Chamber said.
“We are keeping a strict vigil to nail any such official involved in similar rackets,” the principal home secretary added.
