Lima : Nine people have been killed when the vehicle in which they were travelling plunged into a 40-metre-deep ravine in Cuzco in southeastern Peru, Spanish news agency EFE reported Tuesday.
The accident occurred on the highway between Cuzco and Quillabamba cities. All the nine passengers in the vehicle were killed Monday.
The driver might have lost control of the vehicle due to high speed and bad road conditions. Officials are yet to find out the exact cause of the accident.
The authorities have not begun to remove the bodies from the site, hence the identities of the victims remain unknown, the news agency quoted local media reports as saying.
According to a police estimate, more than 800 people have been killed and 5,000 injured in around 2,000 road accidents in Peru last year.
