Maoist killed, policeman hurt during raid

Raipur : A joint team of about 100 policemen from Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra started a pre-dawn raid Thursday on a Maoist hideout in the forests straddling the two states, killing a senior rebel, the police said.

“The joint team early Thursday surrounded the rebels’ hideout near Panawar and Manpakhanjur hamlets in the forests of Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district close to Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district. A senior Maoist cadet was killed in the raid,” Pawan Deo, deputy inspector general (DIG) of Kanker range, told IANS over phone from the site, some 400 km south of state capital Raipur.

He also informed that a Maharashtra police constable was injured seriously in the raid.

“The police recovered a huge cache of explosives and Maoist literature from their hideout,” Deo said, and added that details about the exact number Maoist causalities would not be known before Thursday evening, as the rebels were still firing at the policemen.
