Pakistan army kills over 90 militants in tribal region: spokesman

Islamabad : Pakistani security forces on Friday killed over 90 militants in two incidents in the country’s tribal region, an army statement said.

The army conducted operations in two different locations of South Waziristan after the militants fired rockets at security forces, the statement said.

“Today at 12:30 pm, a convoy of Security Forces moving on Jandola- Wana Road was fired upon from Chaghmalai with small arms and rockets.

Security Forces retaliated and engaged militants/miscreants with small arms and rockets”.

He said the fire fight continued for one hour, adding that exact number of miscreant’s casualties is not known, however, it is estimated that 20-30 miscreants were killed.

Four Security Forces personnel received injuries and 2 vehicles were damaged, he said.

The spokesman said that miscreants started engaging Ladha Fort with small arms and rockets at 10 am on Friday.

“A large number of miscreants started gathering around north of the Fort at 3 pm and the security Forces used artillery, mortars and small arms fire to engage the miscreants”.

“Reportedly, 50-60 miscreants were killed and rest of them dispersed. Security Forces suffered no casualty,” the spokesman said.

Another army statement said that gunship helicopters engaged 2 cars in the vicinity of Sipla Toi Fort in South Waziristan yesterday and killed 8 miscreants.

The statement said that miscreants also fired a few rockets and small arms at Ladha Fort last night.

“Security Forces responded with artillery and small arms, but no loss or damage occurred”.

The army denied media reports that Sipla Toi For has been taken over by miscreants, saying the troops still manning the Fort.

Meanwhile the security forces conducted a search operation in district Tank at the outskirts of South Waziristan, a police officer said.

Tank police chief Mumtaz Zareen said that the security forces, including army, searched few localities and arrested four persons.

He said that more then 60 persons were arrested a week ago in a similar operation but 30 were freed later and others are still being questioned.

Locals said that security forces shelled positions of militants from forts, but there was no casualty.

But the shelling created panic among the people and some people also left areas for safe places, they said.
