Dhaka : A series of road accidents blamed on fog in Bangladesh has left at least 29 people dead and scores injured, Deutsche Presse-Agentur “DPA” quoted police and witnesses as saying today.
The national meteorological office said the mishaps occurred in fog as a cold wave pushed daytime temperatures to below 10 degrees Celsius in the north.
The worst accident happened overnight in the shanty town of Keraniganj, nearly 25 kilometers east of the capital, Dhaka, killing 10 people and injuring 35.
“We believe the road accident is the result of a head-on collision between two passenger coaches trying to steer away from an autorickshaw which has come in the way,” local police chief Selim Sajjad said.
The death toll from the worst single road accident so far in 2008 could rise because many among the injured were in critical condition, Sajjad said.
In other accidents, five people were killed in Tangail and four in the Habiganj district in eastern Bangladesh.
Ten other deaths were reported from four districts in the southern and central zones.
