Nairobi : At least seven persons died in Kenya on Thursday when police charged at demonstrators in a second day of protests, organized by the opposition against the re-election of President Mwai Kibaki.
According to reports from humanitarian organizations, the clash between protesters and police took place at Mathare neigborghood, considered one of the strongholds of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement.
The ODM confirmed this morning that it will not end demonstrations despite the police repression.
Protests will continue and they will neither intimidate nor stop us until we reach our goal, said the secretary general of that movement, Anyang Nyongo.
The group called for three days of protests, from Wednesday to Friday, which have been marked by the excessive use of force.
It is estimated that more than 600 persons have died in protests shaking the country since December 27, and another 250,000 have been displaced due to clashes.
Last December presidential elections unleashed a political crisis, considered by experts the most intense in the history of this African nation since its independence from Great Britain in 1963.
