World Bank closes Washington offices over bomb threat

Washington : The World Bank’s headquarters in Washington will remain closed on Friday due to a bomb threat, the international financial institution said on its website.

“World Bank Group Corporate Security is investigating a bomb threat received by telephone. The Bank is working with law enforcement officials to determine the validity of the threat,” the statement said.

“As a precautionary measure, Bank Group management has decided to close all World Bank Group leased and owned buildings in Washington on Friday, January 18th,” the bank said.

The World Bank, which provides loans to developing countries, occupies several buildings in central Washington a short walk from the White House. The nearby headquarters of the other “Bretton Woods” institution, the International Monetary Fund, has an office nearby that will remain open.
