Swiss President says what happened in Gaza is a catastrophe

Geneva : Swiss Federal Presidentt Pascal Couchepin described the unfolding humanitarian crisis as a catastrophe in Gaza.

Israel cut off fuel delivery to Gaza Sunday, subsequently power was cut off at eight pm, and up to date some 45 Palestinians were killed, 39 by Israeli air strikes, and six by due to the power cut today.

In a news conference today in Geneva at the Swiss Press Club, Couchepin added that violence must end in the conflict so that peace can be achieved in the Middle East.

Couchepin, asked by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on what role would Switzerland play in diffusing the humanitarian crisis of the Palestinian people in Gaza, Couchepin said that Switzerland would play a role together with other nations. Commenting on his visit to Egypt, Coucehpin noted that there can be no peace in the Middle East without Egypt, but that Egypt cannot make peace alone.

He stressed the importance of Europe’s opening to the Muslim world in a dialogue based on the Muslim community in Europe.
