Aligarh : The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) will set up study centres in Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Kerala and Maharashtra. “In tandem with its objective to work for educational advancement, the AMU has decided to set up these study centres. These centres will help the university in maintaining its national character,” said Prof V K Abdul
Jaleel, Registrar of the university.
The upcoming study centres will have a special admission quota for students coming from the economically weaker sections of society, he added. The centres will carry out over 300 programmes that are being offered by AMU at present. Some degree level programmes in agriculture, commerce, biotechnology, social sciences, life sciences, theology and law will be offered at these centres. At present, there are about 30,000 students enrolled in the 323 programmes offered by the university.
After getting AMU Executive Council’s nod for setting up the study centres, the university has now approached the central Human Resource and Development Ministry for financial assistance.
“We have already written a letter to the ministry asking them to provide financial assistance for opening of such centres. The commencement of these centres depends on clearance and funding from the central government,” said Dr Rahat Abrar, AMU spokesperson.
Meanwhile, the university has decided to set up four admission test centres for MBBS/BDS, B. Tech, B. Arch, MBA and diploma in engineering courses. These centres will open in Bhopal, Calicut, Kolkata and Pune in the current academic session.
