“We will contest the coming assembly elections on our own, and there will be no alliance with any party,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar confirmed here Sunday.

Karnataka is under president’s rule since November 2007 and has to go to polls within six months, that is, by May, according to the constitution.

The BJP came to power in the state, the first such instance in south India, in November for a brief while, but its partner H.D. Deve Gowda’s Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) decided not to support it the day the BJP government was to seek vote of confidence in the assembly.

The break-up led to president’s rule.

The BJP has accused the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the centre of trying to delay the elections to the Karnataka state assembly to avoid a defeat.

However, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi has clarified that it is the Election Commission which is responsible for conducting the polls and the party has no role to play in deciding when the polls would be held.

“If the Congress delays the polls, it will be answerable to the people of Karnataka,” Javadekar said.
