New Delhi : Ulema played a crucial role in India’s freedom movement. But their sacrifices have been deliberately ignored, said prominent freedom fighter Dr Lakshmi Sehgal. She was addressing a seminar on ‘War of Independence and Muslims’ in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking at the seminar, Maulana Ataur Rahman Qasimi, president, Shah Waliullah Muhaddis Dehlvi Institute (Delhi), elaborated on the sacrifices of Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar and Maulana Hasrat Mohani.

Mumbai’s prominent historian and freelance columnist Mr. Amarish dwelt upon the role of Maulana Shah Waliullah Muhaddis Dehlvi, his son Maulana Shah Abdul Aziz and last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar.

They said the books on the war of independence were written under the influence of false propaganda by Englishmen, who termed the war of independence a mutiny. Shah Waliullah and Shah Abdul Aziz launched a movement against British imperialism and devised slogans to vivify freedom movement and issued fatwas through which they intended to unite all communities.
