Bhopal : The Madhya Pradesh assembly here witnessed unruly scenes Monday, with the opposition accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of allowing communal riots in Indore and promoting lawlessness in the state.
Condemning the government for not preventing communal riots and stopping former chief minister Digvijay Singh and other Congress leaders from attending the session by arresting them in Indore, the opposition declared that they would not allow the house to function in protest.
The opposition also accused the police of attempting to murder the leader of the opposition Jamuna Devi Sunday and trooped into the well of the house thrice, shouting slogans against the government.
Communal clashes rocked Indore during the shutdown called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) July 3 against the revocation of land allotment to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board by the Jammu and Kashmir government. Six people were killed during the violence that continued unabated for three days despite curfew being imposed in the entire city.
After two brief adjournment, Speaker Ishwardas Rohani dismissed the house for the day after legislators of the ruling party paid tributes to Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande, who had died during the inter-session period.
The opposition parties, mainly the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, also held protests against the Indore riots outside the house. More than 500 Congress workers courted arrest.
Congress worker Abdul Rehman, who made an unsuccessful bid to immolate himself at the busy Roshanpura crossing, was arrested while others were released after about an hour.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party workers went on a sit-in protest.
