Indore : The senior Congress leaders, who were arrested Sunday while on their way to visit riot-hit areas of the curfew-bound city, have been released and allowed to meet the victims, official sources said Monday.
Communal clashes rocked Indore Thursday during the shutdown call by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad to protest against the revocation of land allotment to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board by the Jammu and Kashmir government.
Six people were killed during the violence that continued unabated for three days despite curfew being imposed in the entire city.
The Congress leaders, including former chief minister Digvijay Singh, state unit president Suresh Pachouri, legislator Ajay Singh and union ministers V.Narayanasamy and Kantilal Bhuria, were released Monday afternoon.
They were arrested Sunday after they reached Indore airport to visit the violence affected areas and were later shifted to Dewas.
The police had under section 144 of the Indian Penal Code banned gathering of more than four people at a place near Dewas Circuit House, where the Congress leaders were lodged for the night.
