Weapons, Ammo Confiscated in Baghdad

By Prensa Latina,

Baghdad : The Iraqi Police seized an arsenal found in al-Maalef neighborhood, south west Baghdad, in an operation called Fardh al-Qanoon that is aimed at restoring security.

A source from Baghdad’s Operations Command said that although the National Police 5th Brigade made no arrests, it located 15 grenades, two rockets, Katyusha machineguns and plenty of ammunition.

The government, backed by occupying foreign troops, had launched a security plan on al-Maalef neighborhood since February 2007, aimed at eliminating armed groups operating in the capital and its surroundings.

In addition to the violence prevailing at some city areas, the rest of Iraq reported daily attacks with car bombs, home-made explosives and grenades, leaving an alarming toll.

Judiciary sources quoted by Aswat al-Iraq news agency said over 109,000 prisoners benefited with a general amnesty launched in February.
