Berlin urges swift release of Zimbabwean opposition leaders

Berlin : Germany here Monday called on the Zimbabwean government to quickly release several leading opposition politicians who were arrested over the past days.

Talking at a routine weekly press briefing, deputy foreign ministry spokesperson Andreas Peschke branded the detentions which included also Arthur Mutambara, as “completely unacceptable.” He added that the arrest were aimed at “intimidating the (Zimbawean) opposition ahead of the June 27 presidential run-off elections” in the south African country.

Peschke urged the government to ensure a “transparent and hassle- free” snap poll.
