Musharraf says Pak-US ties vital for regional peace

Islamabad : President Pervez Musharraf on Monday said the stable and broad-based relationship between Pakistan and United States was in the interest of both countries and also vital for lasting peace in the region.

In his meeting with U.S. Under Secretary for Defence Eric S.

Edelman, heading a six-member delegation, President Musharraf expressed satisfaction that Pak-US relations remained on a positive and upward trajectory.

The President highlighted Pakistan’s role in war against terrorism and said the country was firm in its resolve to fight terrorism and extremism in accordance with its values and national interest.

He expressed the hope that the visit by U.S. delegation would serve to further enhance the existing excellent relations between the two countries in defence cooperation.

The U.S. Defence Under Secretary said the U.S. government was committed to assist Pakistan government in meeting its legitimate defence needs and bolstering its capabilities in war on terror.

He stressed for increased collaboration in training, joint exercises, defence procurement and production.

Regional geo-political situation with particular reference to Afghanistan also came under discussion.
